Good versus Good versus Good

I was reading some postings today on Alignment (starting at Tenkar's Tavern), where I had some thoughts about Alignment in Sophia's Children. Specifically how the three major Religions upon Nod: The All-One Church, Messianic Church and the Baptists differ in their implementation of Good.

The Matriarchal Messianic Church
will use force, any force necessary
The Messianic Church is Dominant Good in Alignment. The overarching approach of governance is through control, force and institutional power. The goal of this approach is to create the most benefit for all and to crush the forces that would work against this goal. Using force, physical force if necessary, to accomplish the most good.

A Paladin ready to enforce The Oath
of the All-One Church
The All-One Church is Lawful Good in Alignment. The methods employed by they is to employ fairness, rule of laws that are consistently applied and justice in the service of the same ends as the Messianics: create the most good for all while suppressing the forces that would sabotage this goal. To trust in and enforce a code, a system, that furthers the most good.

An example of a Chaotic Good force upon Nod are the Baptists. They cooperate with the Messianic Church -- to the degree that they are allowed -- towards the end of serving the people. They are not overly attached with converting Messianics to their religion, only seeking to seize opportunities to do good in the world. To take whatever opportunities exist to do good.

The Messianic Church tolerates the Baptists as they are not a force that threatens them and also because they work towards similar goals. However, within the All-One Church's State the Baptists are forced to convert -- indeed, the practice of any religion but the State's is illegal.

The forces of "Good" are not necessarily the forces of "Kumbaya."

Alignment Quiz: A Few More Dilemmas

"Join us tonight. We have no rules. We don't mind that you'll be at Church the next Sunday asking the Messiah for forgiveness, spitting curses at us. This tiny packet of powder, a natural product of the Earth, is all you need to achieve Ecstasy  Yes, take this sample. Taste it. There will be more where that came from tonight. . ."
-'Peace Be Unto You,' High Priest of the Pink Flower Cult

Here are a few more dilemmas from the Alignment Quiz I am developing:

The Bet
Your Family has just won a nice sum of Silver in a Numbers-Lottery held monthly by the local Thief Guild. This Money will afford your Family's expenses for the next Few Months, with some to spare for Savings. When collecting your Winnings the Money-Man advises you that you could Triple your Winnings by participating in a Dice-Game that is just about to start at one of the Taverns nearby.
Do you:
1) Take your Winnings home to your Family, passing on the Game of Chance, or
2) Announce tat you Will Play, as the Potential Winnings could make your Family's living situation much More Comfortable.

The Coin
You are walking a Friend back to a Orphanage where he now lives, as his parents had both died several months ago. After seeing him to the door, you see a Gold Coin that had been lodged between two cobblestones on the side of the road.
Do you:
1) Give the Coin to your Friend, or
2) Pocket the Coin without mentioning it.

The Fight
You and a Rival are engaged in a Duel of fisticuffs. The Fight lasts for some time and you are being Cheered on by Friends. Your Rival lands a Powerful Blow that Knocks you to the floor -- you Black Out for a moment. When you come to, you see that your Friends have grappled your Rival and are encouraging you to take a Free Shot.
Do you:
1) Take the Free Shot, it's Too Bad your Rival didn't have his own Allies nearby, or
2) Order your Friends to release your Rival, as he has proven to be the Better Combatant.

More Ethical Dilemmas

"They call themselves 'Magic-users' -- how sterile! They call us Witches, but have no understanding. They crow about our Methods, that we consort with Demons -- our Familiars -- for our Spell-magic, but if they really knew where their own powers came from they'd jump out the tops of their Towers from the Madness!"
-Gabriella the Witch

Here a few more of the Ethical Dilemmas for my little subgame that occurs during Character Creation. As of right now here are the steps in the process:

  1. Roll for Birth Sign (adds +1 to an Ability Score, set one of either Appearance or Personality).
  2. Select Race (adds +1 to an Ability Score with a randomness indicated by Race).
  3. Roll for Background as indicated by Race (adds +1 to an Ability Score, confers starting equipment and two Level 0 Abilities).
  4. Select Appearance and Personality (one of which must be within the category dictated by Birth Sign).
  5. Test for Alignment.

For the initial iteration of the game there will two Races: the Westmen and Hassan. Both of these Races are closely related historically upon the continent of Nod, though the City of Nein lays within the Mother Empire of the Westmen proper. The initial Classes will be the Fighter, Magic-user and Thief.

Anyways, I wanted to post a few more of the Ethical Dilemmas for the Alignment Test. Again, I have developed an alternate Alignment system (read more about it here and here) which differs from the original Dungeons & Dragons system in two major ways: 1) there is a third component to both Lawful-Chaotic and Good-Evil that is not an average or compromise of the binary -- but an expansion of the binary into a third ethical or moral dimension, and 2) Alignment is an immutable element of a character's Soul, Psyche or Mind which can be resisted, compromised with or embraced -- how a player may roleplay this is an element of the game. E.G.: A player may have their character be Lawful Good, yet mercenary in his methods -- frequently wracked with guilt. Or a player may have their character be Chaotic Dexter, uncompromisingly mercenary with no guilt at all!

The Woman
You are helping a neighbor transport provisions for resale in the Free Market. While roping the carts and oxen you catch a Young Woman stealing two bundles of food from one of the carts. Do you: 1) Warn her that she should turn over your neighbor's property or you will hail the Guard, or 2) Let her go without mentioning the incident to your neighbor.

The Master
While shopping in the Free Market there is a commotion as a Large Man shouts and whips another Man to the ground. "I am your Master and you will obey!" shouts the Brute. You are abashed as the two Men are directly in front of you -- the Master looks directly into your eyes. Do you: 1) Silently nod and turn away, recognizing the power of the Master, or 2) Call attention to the abuse by shouting for the Guard.

The Party
You are in attendance at a grand party hosted by a wealthy friend. It is raucous with a bevy of libertines, masked carousers and much in the way of food and drink. While following an invitation to privately sample some imported Ether with a particularly attractive attendee your friend approaches you, announcing that a Guild Master in attendance has agreed to speak to you regarding your business proposal. Do you: 1) Go with your friend to discuss your long-planned business matter with the Guild Master, or 2) Ignore your friend, as you continue on to meet with the desirable stranger you met earlier in the evening.

The Alignments. . .Part 2

"In the First Book of the Law it is written that Sophia was among us in Three Sacred Forms: that of the Child, the Warrior and the Grandmother. These forms correspond to the three Modes of Being inside all of Mankind, in that we are Her creations. The Mute Child is innocent indulgence and gathers to Herself, in her curiosity, all nourishment and pleasure -- even beyond Her ability to consume it. The War Maiden sees only Adversary and Ally, Friend or Foe. The Blind Crone sees the Balance in all things as Her milky vision is unhampered by visceral sight. It was only in Her Three Forms that Sophia could teach us the relative value of each Mode of Being."
-Gregor the Curate, Sophist at the Old Nein Asylum

In the game, as it stands, there is a nine-fold alignment system, but it lacks any "Neutrality." I have introduced replacements for Neutral in both the Law-Chaos and Good-Evil binaries. Below I have included a brief description of how these operate as alignments within the game.

The Three Methods

Order & Lawfulness: Those who hail to Lawfulness as their Method of action look to Reason, Principles, Organization and Logical Concluding as their guiding lights. Civilization, even with its imperfections, is seen as the ultimate expression of Intelligence, next to the other Methods. Lawful characters hold intelligence and reasonable decision-making above all else.

The Chaotic Method: Those who hold Chaos as their Method respect only Opportunity. There is an unformed Void in each and every moment where the Most Advantageous choice can be discovered. Intuition and Guile are the High Virtues. Organization in its various forms is only as valuable as the advantages it creates and may be reformed and destructed as needed and at-will.

Power & Dominance: The adherents of Power see only Might as Right. The winning Method is the one in which the Greatest Strength is found. Ideas and even Feelings are simply stories the Weak tell themselves so as to rationalize their loss to the Strong. The Dominant character values Strength, whether it be personal or political power, above all things.

The Three Modes

Goodness, To Thrive: The Good Mode of Being is for the greatest benefit for All, even for those where this creates no reciprocal benefit. Good characters see the value in promoting the Common Welfare and look the cohesiveness of the Group. Good characters oppose those who would sabotage these efforts.

Evilness, To Consume: The Evil Mode of Being is for the greatest benefit for the Self, even at the cost to others. All relationships are ephemeral: to the extent that they are useful for the moment. Group cohesion is a tool and not an end in and of itself. It is used only to serve the ends of the Evil person. The interpersonal conflict of the Evil character is paradoxical: they are all-at-once opposed to all (since they ultimately serve only themselves) and in alliance with all (since everyone is a possible proxy for personal benefit). In reality, they are in relationship only with themselves and their own ravenous appetites.

Dexter, Oppose the Sinister: The Dexter Mode is in opposition to the Sinister -- the Adversary. These characters value Survival of the Tribe above all else and will destroy those that inhibit this survival. Dexter characters see the world in black & white: there are good things that promote survival and there are bad things that endanger it. These characters will cooperate in groups, but will resist attempts to compromise and will exterminate perceived discord and Adversaries with extreme prejudice.

The Nine Alignments

Lawful Good: It is through Reason, Principles and Intelligent action that the Greatest Good for all beings will be achieved. Those that seek to usurp the Law or abuse the weak will be dealt with justly.

Lawful Evil: Manipulation and calculated deceit are used to achieve the fulfillment of the carnal appettite. Will use Intelligence and Reason to defeat one's foes, but prefers to turn foes into friends (turn them out).

Lawful Dexter: The Intellect is what really ensures our surival. Reflective insight will reveal who is with us and who is against us.

Chaotic Good: There are opportunities to promote the common welfare everywhere, you just have to look hard enough. Sometimes these methods may seem strange are even illegal to others, but what matters is that lives have been saved and the weak have been protected.

Chaotic Evil: All that matters is the appetite. Other people are opportunities to quench the everlasting thirst.

Chaotic Dexter: Survival is a creative effort and the methods employed to promote survival are often unorthodox. Whenever or whatever opportunities life throws at you, take it if it means an advantage for you and your ken!

Dominant Good: It is only through political or personal Force that the weak can be protected from predators. Seeks to ensure the Greatest Good for All through Power -- and will fiercely oppose those that would usurp these efforts.

Dominant Evil: The quickest way to get what you want is to take it. All the better if you can press-gang others into to taking it for you!

Dominant Dexter: Outsiders can't be trusted and the surest way to survive is through displays or power. Will quickly strike out against those they see as a threat.

Alignment. . .Part 1

Later, I will be posting a deeper explanation of how I have conceptualized Alignment in Sophia's Children. I have drawn up this representation of the six Forces that play out across the nine alignments. For now I will leave this here:
